The laser emits a source of energy that is preferentially absorbed by the dark pigment in your hair. The use of a chilled tip protects the surrounding anatomy such as skin and other tissue.
With repeated use, this heating damages the cells surrounding the hair shaft as well as the bulb of the hair. The laser only effectively treats the hair in the growth cycle, and different areas of the body have different growth cycles. Therefore, we treat each area in different intervals ranging from 4 to 12 weeks. Several treatments are needed in these intervals to achieve maximum results.

How should I prepare for treatment?
For the laser to target the dark pigment in your hair, it is important that there is hair present in the follicle. If you currently bleach, pluck, tweeze, wax, or have electrology, you must stop for 6 weeks prior to treatment. You may shave or cut the re-growth between treatments.
For each appointment, you will need to shave the area to be treated before your visit. Patients with especially coarse hair or those who are having large areas treated may want to consider using a topical anesthetic, or numbing cream, to make treatment more comfortable. The best way to use topical anesthetic cream (May be called EMLA cream or tetracaine) is to apply it liberally to the treatment area, 45 minutes to 1 hour prior to treatment. Following this, cover the area with plastic wrap and allow the cream to remain in place until the time of your treatment. When you arrive at the office, you may wipe off the cream from the treatment area just prior to treatment, or leave it in place and your laser treatment specialist will remove it for you.

The duration of your appointment will vary depending on the area(s) you are having treated. The appointment time ranges from 15 minutes for an upper lip/chin treatment, to 90 minutes for full legs.
